Career history I have 15 years' experience in the research industry. I am a full member of the Market Research Society (MRS) and a member of the Social Research Association (SRA). Before going freelance, I worked for 9 years at BMRB International, a top 6 UK agency. On joining, in 1992, I underwent their industry renowned in-house graduate training scheme and obtained the MRS Diploma. Early experience focused on customer satisfaction surveys, local government public consultation and media research. From 1995 I worked in the Social Research Division, specialising in work for the public and voluntary sectors. In 1997 I was promoted to Associate Director, with managerial and budget responsibility. On leaving BMRB in August 2001, to have first child, was a Senior Associate Director responsible for a team of 5 Research Executives. Since forming Research Matters in 2001 I have worked for a variety of public and not for profit sector organisations on a part-time basis. |

Recent Experience
Through Research Matters I have provided research consultancy to charities and public sector organisations on the following issues: charity governance, policy research, supporter relations, housing and environment. Clients include a housing association, an environmental consultancy, and various charities in the fields of: overseas relief and development, child protection, ex-Service welfare, disability and consumer/citizen rights.
In 2005/06 I was involved in the design and
implementation of a significant piece of policy research for the
Royal British Legion, in collaboration with the management
consultants Compass Partnership. This research into the
welfare needs of the ex-Service community involved quantitative and
qualitative research as well as forecasting of future needs. The
landmark reports written by myself have been published by the Royal
British Legion, and gained considerable media interest. They are

Formative years
Whilst at BMRB I conducted surveys for many central Government
departments and public sector agencies including the Home Office, DSS,
DfEE, COI, OME, ACAS and the Court Service among others; with published
studies for the Home Office, OME and the National Lottery Commission.
Topic areas researched include crime, citizenship, racial
discrimination, employment and careers, benefits, human resources.
For the not for profit sector, I conducted several policy-related
studies with published reports for SCOPE, the British Heart Foundation
and the National Centre for Volunteering. I also conducted
supporters' opinion research for various national charities amongst
different stakeholders i.e. donors, volunteers, mail order customers,
corporate sponsors, potential supporters etc.
I gained experience of all the main modes of data collection (face-to-face, telephone, postal) and sampling techniques (from quota to random probability). I am familiar with both consumer and b2b interviewing. |
